STANDARD SURGERY

Standard surgery is the most common surgical technique used by general practitioners, dermatologists and plastic surgeons to excise skin lesions.

The lesion to be removed is usually marked with a margin (small margin if it is benign or larger margin if malignant).

The repair of the wound (i.e. how the wound is to be closed) is planned at the time of the excision. This type of surgery is usually done under local anaesthetic.

Tissue taken at the time of excision is sent for routine histopathology, and may take several days for the results to return. The doctor will provide the patient with the findings.

If the tumour is not completely excised by standard surgery then further surgery will be required.
